In canon it knocks people out temporarily, usually about ten minutes. I'd say that it would knock out medium-sized monsters (the normal monsters, not NS-only characters) and smaller for about that time, long enough to get away. Larger monsters would be much less effective. They might get woozy and/or disorientated for two turns, but nothing more severe than that. NS-only characters and the largest kind of monsters would be completely unaffected.
