I has noobish question

So, are the patient's rooms locked with the patients inside?  Say, if a patient wakes up before the nurse comes to pick them up, and they tried the door would it be locked?  I'd think it would be for security purposes, especially with a more rebellious/violent patient, but if that's the case, what if the patient has to use the bathroom or needs medical help or some such?  Is there a kind of ring-for-nurse system going on?

Somehow I was under the impression that something in whatever they "used" to put the patient out for the night (between end of night shift and beginning of day shift, in order to have them in their beds) ensured that they only wake up at the right time. So maybe the lock isn't so much on the door as on the patient's mind/consciousness itself.

xD But I'm BSing, someone else who actually knows will answer. My commenting was actually just an excuse to go "HAY ENVY!"

Yeah, the door is locked all the time that a patient is in their room during the day until a nurse comes to get them. XD; Depending on how violent/intimidating a patient is, they might even be escorted out with orderlies or... what have you. XD

A call-nurse system, though... hmmm. o_o They kind of magically know if something is up, but that'd be a cool thing to have. >_>;

In seriousness, I don't know much about the operating procedures in mental institutes, though I do recal reading 'Girl, Interrupted' (it's autobiographical, therefore not fiction and at least partway credible) in which the patients have periodic 'checks', where the nurse just comes and opens their door and makes sure they aren't making a mess/hurting themselves/having sex with another patient or what have you. Bad patients get five-minute checks and good behavior earns less frequent check periods.


Anyway. Door locked. Is all I needed to know. Now Envy can have a frustrating time failing to break the wall open.
