Radio Communication

I was wondering does anyone have like communicators or two-way radios in Landels? Are they even possible/allowed to make?

The Jedi made a pair before Qui-Gon vanished, so whether or not they still have both of the modded radios it's theoretically possible (and I'm pretty sure there's a couple of people working on making more of them IC).

The makeshift commlinks they had would've been unreliable if we'd had more of a chance to use them: I think the range was limited to one floor/half a floor and it would cut in and out. Not sure if it'd drain more on the batteries or what. But I know Qui-Gon's lost his since whatever he had in the room vanished with him.

Assuming it even got through to the second one, yeah, it would've been garbled and have had static.

Yes, two way radios are doable, with a few tools and patience. But as was mentioned, they aren't going to be great working and there will be interference.

Outta curiosity, how? I mean, in the actual technical sort of way. I don't know much about this sort of thing, but I'd presume that as a radio of that kind doesn't come naturally equipped with some specific... thing for input... sound waves or whatever. I mean, wouldn't they need to, I dunno, steal/make/find some parts for that? For like a mic or something? Or is there just some kind of... REVERSING THE POLARITY or whatever that'll switch it around? Does the actual physical equipment allow for that? And if it sorta functions like a walkie-talkie, a radio doesn't-- I mean, how would they manage to switch between transmitting and receiving? Do they have a button to press or something? And what about changing frequencies? Can they even have relative privacy when communicating with people, or do they just sort of broadcast to everyone? Probably not, but I mean like-- huhwha?

AGAIN, this is really just ignorance on my part, but I can't help but wonder if this is assuming too much or whatever. I'm probably overthinking things again. /)_(\

The beautiful thing about the radios is that it's honestly just a case of switching some wires. I tested it myself with my brother in law, and it does work. The broadcasting will only work on one specific frequency (which one, I don't know) and both radios need to be tuned to it. As for how you specify sending/receiving, it's a matter of futzing with those wires that were switched. You disconnect one wire to receive, connect it to send. But it's pretty easy to set that up with a really simple switch made out of anything that'll...slip down into the radio and manipulate a thin wire. And you talk into the speaker.

(Yeah, I don't know the technical terms off hand, the BIL did all the explaining and actual converting of our thrift store radios, and all my notes died with my computer.)

And it really is easier to just...gloss over all the little details of it, but it is definitely real-world feasible.

Already said this in chat, but THANK YOU AGAIN, FEY. ♥ We're lost without you. ;; ♥♥♥

The Hitachiin twins do, courtesy of Washu, but they almost never work.

It was recently discussed/planned on the bulletin board, here (http://community.livejournal.com/damned_bulletin/466461.html), for the record.

Also, Fey's right on the tech--I think I know even LESS than she does, but basically speakers and microphones are the same thing... or something like that. There are programs out there to let you record onto your iPod by speaking into the headset.

In random news, did I mention Sumeragi Hokuto wants to greet Hitsugaya by picking him up in a hug or something? XD

Exactly -- it's like generators and motors, you can turn speakers into microphones and vice versa -- they only make them as separate products because a *good* speaker and a *good* microphone have different desired characteristics.

If anyone needs the details for a post, I can walk people through the theory. But a "move a wire here, clean this off to make sure it makes good contact because no soldering irons means not being able to make them as sturdy, blah blah" is completely accurate. It's freshman-college-engineering electronics, and any character who was into electronics at all as a kid probably knows how -- building cheap radios is a standard first project and has been for a long time. (If you're wondering which characters would be able to do it -- both of mine could.)

There are other fun-with-electronics tricks people could try, though ~Institute Physics~Â ccould ixnay some. Like just plugging into outlets and sending messages over the wiring.
