History, woo!
Okay, so Emi and I were talking about it and we realized that Okita is actually kind of famous. :x Basically, anyone who has a character who is Japanese and born around the time of or after the Bakumatsu Revolution (meaning after about 1860) would probably know of him unless they failed history like WHOA.
So the Bakumatsu is the period that ends the Tokugawa era in Japan, where the Imperialists (rebels from Choushuu and other provinces) rose up against the Tokugawa shogunate and reinstalled the Emperor. It's the revolution that began the Meiji Era and really opened Japan to the West.
More information on the Bakumatsu here.
However, Okita Souji (historical) was on the side of the Tokugawa government. He fought with the Shinsengumi based at Mibu Temple in Kyoto to stop the Imperialists (specifically the Choushuu rebels) to keep power for the Aizu Clan and the Tokugawa shogun. He was known as one of the most powerful and deadly of the Shinsengumi swordsmen, and was captain of the First Unit. One of the youngest members of the group, Okita gained mastery of his swordsmanship style by the age of 18. He fought at the Ikedaya inn, which was a major loss to the Choushuu forces, but also fell victim to his tuberculosis there. Okita died at age 25 (according to the East Asian Calender) from tuberculosis, alone in Edo while the rest of the Shinsengumi were fighting a losing battle against the Imperialists.
More detailed information on Okita can be found at the Wikipedia page.
More information on the Shinsengumi is here.
Okita Souji (PMK) has all of the memories of the historical version, but only up to the Ikedaya. He doesn't know that he'll die from tuberculosis or that the Shinsengumi lose. He's also girly as hell, has purple hair and eyes, and usually carries around a pet piglet. PMK!Okita loves sweets which isn't true of history!Okita and has encountered mystic forces and zombies, which history!Okita did not.
PMK!Okita's Landel's Wiki can tell you more.
tl;dr = Okita was a bad-ass swordsman. He died of tuberculosis and people make dramas and anime about him. A lot. PMK!Okita is a girl, only not really.
Any other questions about the history or PMK and I can answer them, just ask. XD

Which war did Kagetora fight in? I should really read up on your series XD;; /fails/

Souji has a lot of stuff saved, so I'll tell her to link ya if you are still curious. I usually just mooch off her resources when I need to look something up.
Kenshin Uesugi, Kagetora's adopted father and the Naoe Clan's Master (in a way at least... kinda), fought in the Battle of Kawanakajima which has a poem written about it and is according to Mirage of Blaze cannon (and I think actual historical fact) there was no other feudal period battle had had as many casualties. Both Kagetora and Naoe fought in that battle. That's the major battle that Naoe tells Takaya about when he first finds Takaya, because it's one of the most famous that they were in.
After Kenshin died, Kagetora warred with his adopted brother (Naoe's like, actual, Master) and eventually committed suicide to rob his enemies of the pleasure of being the one to kill him (at least that is what he says).
Naoe died a few years after Kagetora and continued to be loyal to who would be considered Kagetora's 'enemy' until after death... when his loyalties sort of changed... a little. >.> Okay a lot. Actually it was during their first 'life' as Possessors that Naoe first started to develop feelings for Kagetora and it freaked him out something wicked since he had never had feelings for a man before.... but that's not stuff that Okita would know anyway. XD
Oh FYI, Naoe actually married into the Naoe Clan so he's not born into the spiffy name or anything (Ah, Japan, the only country where the husband can take on the wife's name).

Kurikara...probably won't know him? I don't think the shikigami meddle in human affairs much but since he's also a deity..I've got no idea. XD;

Shikigami probably don't care about human affairs so I wouldn't be surprised if Kurikara was all "...you're not that impressive. I'M A GOD RAWR" or something. XD
I love your choice of icon there.

Kurikara might like his hair though. >> Just saying.

As for Mugen and Jin ...
Okita was a bad-ass swordsman.
I think that's all they'd need to know before swooping on him.

PMK!Okita is a girl, only not really.
How does that work?
(I only watched a couple episodes of PMK before deciding it wasn't worth the time, so, *doesn't know* >.>)

And I initially downloaded and saved all of PMK and also though "meh, whatever," but later went back and watched it on a whim. You can see what happened then. XD
