FFVII PEOPLE, LEND ME YOUR EARS.

The Compilation is making things Complicated, so I thought this might be useful. Just to try and keep everything as consistent as possible? :x

In the Japanese version of FFVII, they used the ‘Fire, Fira, Firaga’ system. In the English version, they used ‘Fire1, Fire2, Fire3’. Which do we want to go with? Furthermore, Crisis Core introduces more information about materia: not only do we have 5 main classifications of materia (each with their own colour), but now sub-classifications, and their colorations are slight variations of the main. To top it all off, we also have a few additional materia…

As for how big materia is, I think the usual interpretation is that they come in slightly different sizes? Most are about as big as a marble, but they can be larger, etc. According to the FFVII wiki, that's canon? IDK, maybe I'm just slow.

So, what do we do about this? (Yuffie is canon compliant, but I don’t want to steam-roller anybody and everybody.) If you want any more info, feel free to ask. If want to add more info, or anything of the sort, please feel free to add it!

(Note: Mostly asking in case this ever comes up in IC conversation, or if any of the FFVII people ever get SC.)

I...don't play an FFVII character, but I always liked Fire, Fira, Firaga myself.

/two cents

I'm more accustomed to fire, fira and so on.

And I agree about different size materia. The one is Aeris' hair and then the ones in AC. So...I imagine they vary?

If Yuffie has materia, Rude will steal it 8|

Me too. :\ They sound better, in general.

RUDE CAN KEEP HIS GREASY SHINRA PAWS OFF OF YUFFIE'S MATERIA. 8|

Yeah. I mean...were we supposed to be so dumb we didn't understand that Fira was a level up from fire? I NO LETS PUT A 2 THAR INSTED.

SHE CAN KEEP HERS OFF HIS GREASY SHINRA BUTTOCKS THEN.

I agree with Bex in that the materia seems to vary. The one in Aeris' hair seems quite small, otherwise she couldn't wear it, but maybe its because it's special, as the white materia. Remember, for those of us that played the game, the black materia was much larger. In Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children materia are about the size of a fist or baseball, which is the most commonly seen version.

[identity profile] itsabere.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I do remember that the black materia was a lot larger. But I do think I need to re-play the game, since it's been a few months. As I mentioned to Maia in one of the comments below, one thing I'm wondering about is baseball-sized materia in relation to actually equipping it?

I've found this (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Materia) article kind of helpful... but if you've got any more opinions, I'd love to hear them!

[identity profile] continuum.livejournal.com 2009-02-16 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always thought yeah, different sizes. @__@ I mean, like someone pointed out they could just be special, but I think it'd be easier just to have them vary than to start sorting out individually which ones might be special or not. D: I assume, though, that the baseball-sized types are the average size.

As for the other thing -- I avoid talking about materia in depth and things related to game mechanics in general simply because of, well, STUFF LIKE THIS *flaily hands* But if I do, I prefer the fire, fira, firaga system because having numerals at the end makes it look too much like you're talking about an actual video game than just something from a fictional world. DX;; idk, it just breaks the fourth wall a bit for me. ANYWAY. YES. That is my $0.02.

My only issue with the baseball size being the standard is the whole... y'know, slotting them into weapons and armor aspect. :x But, yeah. 8D

YEAH there is that. @__@ Maybe they shrink and grow ~magically~ to fit when you slot them in. AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENT FUNCTION. Part of every standard model?

orz compilation WHY U DO DIS. D8 I'm... I'll admit that I'm inclined to suggest that the marble-size is the standard, but idk, really. UM. I found this (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Materia) article interesting, if you wanna take a look?

I like the the Fire, Fira, Figara version myself (although I'm not a FF VII person).

They definitely vary in size. Most seemed to be pretty small, but the Big Materia was larger, if I remember correctly.

There's also an annoying retcon in Before Crisis--Red XIII has a mate, but it's obvious from conversations in FF VII that he didn't have one before/during the game. Mind you, she seemed like a decent character, but Red meeting her too soon goes against his characterization in the original game.

[identity profile] itsabere.livejournal.com 2009-02-17 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't it implied that she's been off praying or something for a few years, hence her not making an appearence in FFVII? IDK. Retcons, you are annoying.

[identity profile] toadally4boobs.livejournal.com 2009-02-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was implied in BC, but in FF VII, Red's final conversation with Bugenhagen (if you visit in disk 3) had Bugenhagen saying that he knew Red would find a mate someday. It really annoys me that they ignored that scene, even if it was an optional one, because it was good.

*Is slow and dead from work*

But um.... yes. I'm kind of agreeing with the others here. Fire/fira whatever works fine. And that sizes would probably vary, but really I'm open to whatever other people decide on.
