(Anonymous) 2008-03-12 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)"Right, I figured it was something like that from what you've told me before," the other blond responded as he leaned back against the tree's trunk, and he watched as a younger captive did sit-ups by the pond. Claude glanced over at Guy and leaned back too, but chose to stare at the bright, blue sky, preferring it to the prison around them. He listened as Guy continued speaking. "And with all the research, designing and testing that went into our airships, I'm sure the amount of work that went into building a spaceship was staggering. I mentioned that people from the Dawn Age had started on something similar, but..."
"The Dawn Age, huh?" Claude rested his arms on his knees as he watched a bird fly overhead. "It sounds like it was a pretty advanced time. Some things sound comparable to 20th century Earth, but honestly, I don't even know if my time is capable of doing some of the things you've told me." Erecting trees that raised the planet's surface from a muddy poison? It was incredible!
"And there's still a lot we don't know about it," Guy added. "It's like everything started back from square one after the Dawn Age, if you consider all the technology that was lost."
"But it's not like you guys are living in the dark ages or anything now, right?" the Earthling said, though it took him a brief moment to respond because he'd been staring at an oddly shaped cloud. "It seems like your civilization is moving along pretty nicely, despite the set-backs."
"Well, the only reason we have airships now is because we found old fontech from back then," the older blond explained. "And if people from the Dawn Age couldn't figure out how to break through the planet's atmosphere, I doubt I'll be seeing anything like that in my lifetime." The notion sounded vaguely sad coming from him, though Claude wasn't sure if it was because of Guy's tone or because he knew how happy it'd make Guy to see something so marvelous. He suspected it was a bit of both, though.
"Maybe there'll be a big breakthrough," Claude said brightly. "If your people can better understand what exactly makes the airships work, and you can make your very own, original models, then that by itself would be a giant leap forward, don't you think?"
"True," Guy admitted, and he quietly smiled at the thought as his gaze became lost in the pond's reflection. "But sending a person to the moon? I don't know. It doesn't seem likely I'll see it." Claude knew he wasn't trying to be a pessimist, but was trying to be more realistic about the situation, despite how exciting the prospect was. And it was then an idea came to him.
Without even thinking, the younger blond turned to Guy, suddenly looking earnest. "You'll see it," he said firmly. "When we get out of here, I'll take you to the moon myself. I promise." Startled, Guy sharply turned towards Claude, his eyebrows raised.
"What? Are you serious?"
To be honest, the words had left Claude's mouth before he'd had a chance to properly think them over, but he had meant everything he'd said. "Of course! Why, you could even bring Luke, and we could all take a trip together. Don't you think that sounds nice?"
"It doesn't sound nice," Guy said, and for a split second, Claude almost ducked his head, feeling oddly embarrassed for suggesting something so silly, until the other blond continued. "It sounds fantastic! I'd love to go to the moon with you! I can't even imagine what it's like!" Guy let out a huge breath as he settled back against the tree trunk, and he practically glowed at the thought. He wasn't looking at the walls around them, or the other patients, or even Claude anymore, but up above, and once he saw the way Guy's eyes reflected the blue sky, something warm swelled in his heart.
