What exactly does 'small instruments' entail? Obviously not a piano, I suppose, but, say, the entire string family, or just the smaller end?

Also, how likely would it be for an enterprising smuggler to sneak a few strings out of the music room? I've heard that either the E-string or the G-string hee on violins break quite easily. Might it be possible to 'accidentally' break a string and then sneak it out? Or palm a tuning fork, peg, reed, piccolo, and the like?
